For over 15 years, Thurgood Marshall Academy (TMA) has been a landmark in Anacostia. TMA was founded from the experiences of Georgetown University Law School students and faculty in the Street Law program. The law students, teaching at a traditional public high school in ward 8, sought to establish a high school which would prepare students “east of the river” to succeed in college and in life. With fewer than one in ten District of Columbia high school students earning a college degree within five years in 2002, the need for a college-preparatory high school was overwhelming. Naming the school in honor of the late Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall, was a tribute to his role in shaping the legacy of educational equality.
TMA does more than simply educate its students – faculty and staff go the extra mile to prepare them to be successful citizens. Throughout the years, TMA has developed a network of over 50 partnering organizations that provides financial and in-kind support and connects students to over 200 volunteers. These relationships have allowed students to meet with members of the Supreme Court to the United States, engage in college-level math classes at the University of Maryland, and this year, collaborate with mentors from Howard University School of Law. These opportunities have made a life changing impact for TMA students.
TMA’s success would not be possible without you. Thank you for your commitment to Thurgood Marshall Academy.
Since 2001, Thurgood Marshall Academy has remained true to its mission - to prepare students to succeed in college and to actively engage in our democratic society. Join us as we celebrate our founders, family and friends who have made it possible for Thurgood Marshall Academy to go the extra mile.
